IDW Publishing announced Grant Morrison will write James Bond: Sunbreaker at New York Comic Con. The project marks Morrison's first sustained work on the licensed spy property and extends IDW's nine-year James Bond comics program, which launched in 2017 with Warren Ellis and Jason Masters on Vargr.
Morrison brings a distinct pedigree to the franchise. Their previous espionage-adjacent work includes The Invisibles, a creator-owned series that blended occult conspiracy with action tradecraft, and several high-profile superhero runs that reframed established characters through conceptual lenses. Bond represents a tighter genre sandbox: the character comes with 60 years of film and literary continuity, a global licensing apparatus, and a fan base that expects certain tonal markers.
IDW has positioned James Bond as a tent-pole license alongside Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Star Trek. The imprint typically pairs marquee writers with mid-tier artists to differentiate stories from the film side of the IP. Morrison's involvement raises the commercial and critical stakes - their name attracts both the direct market and bookstore buyers who might skip a standard Bond miniseries.
No artist, release date, or issue count was disclosed. Morrison has historically worked on six-to-twelve issue arcs when writing licensed or corporately owned characters, so Sunbreaker likely slots into that range. IDW's Bond books have sold modestly compared to superhero monthlies, but they perform well in collected editions and international markets where the character remains a cultural touchstone.
Why it matters: Morrison's track record pulls in readers who otherwise ignore licensed comics, and IDW needs differentiated products as the direct market fragments. A high-profile Bond run could drive bookstore pre-orders and overseas sales, two channels where IDW has been building share since the pandemic.
