THE 6 STORIES THAT MATTERED · WEEK OF OCTOBER 5–10, 2026

The week in comics, in five minutes. Marvel Unlimited shut down after 19 years as WEBTOON takes over, Informa consolidated convention power with a $2.8 billion Clarion Events buy, and NYCC 2026 wrapped with Harvey Awards and Marvel Television teasers. Your six-story catch-up is below.

THE WEEK IN REVIEW

This week brought a seismic shift in how collectors access Marvel's digital back catalog and a major consolidation in the convention world that hosts the physical culture around it. Marvel Unlimited, the 19-year-old subscription service that became a reference library for thousands of collectors, officially shut down as WEBTOON stepped in to power a new Marvel comics app launching in November. The transition marks the end of an era for a platform that shaped how fans discovered and studied runs, grades, and variant histories before chasing physical copies. Meanwhile, Informa acquired Clarion Events for $2.8 billion, absorbing Anime NYC, Awesome Con, and Rose City Comic Con into a portfolio that now includes Fan Expo Canada and nearly 1,000 live-event brands across 30 countries. The deal underscores how fan conventions, despite drawing crowds north of 170,000, remain small revenue players compared to B2B trade shows—World of Concrete generates more profit than cosplay and autograph lines combined.

New York Comic Con itself delivered the week's cultural center of gravity. Marvel Television teased VisionQuest, Daredevil: Born Again's third and final season, and a 2028 spy thriller called Zodiac, while the Harvey Awards recognized Absolute Batman Vol. 1 as Book of the Year and honored Mike Carey and Thomas Jane's The Lycan as Digital Book of the Year, a nod to Comixology Originals' persistence even as Marvel Unlimited folded. The through-line is consolidation and platform churn: the tools and venues that collectors rely on are being reshaped by corporate deal-making and streaming economics, even as the medium itself—print, digital, manga, YA—continues to expand in every direction the Harveys measured.

THIS WEEK'S 6

One big story from each day this week, Monday through Saturday.

MON · 2026-10-05

01. Marvel Unlimited, the digital comics subscription service that ran for 19 years, is shutting down with WEBTOON taking over the platform in November.

Marvel Unlimited is closing after 19 years as a subscription service that gave collectors on-demand access to tens of thousands of Marvel back issues. The platform became a research tool for collectors tracking down key appearances, variant histories, and storyline context before hunting physical copies. Its shutdown represents the end of Marvel's longest-running digital subscription experiment, which predated the Disney+ era and operated as a standalone product separate from the company's streaming video ambitions.

WEBTOON, the South Korean digital comics platform known for its vertical-scroll format and original webcomics, is taking over Marvel's digital comics operation in November. The transition suggests Marvel is betting on WEBTOON's infrastructure and mobile-first interface to reach a different audience than Marvel Unlimited served. Collectors who relied on Marvel Unlimited for reference and discovery will need to migrate to the new WEBTOON-powered app, though specifics on catalog continuity, pricing, and feature parity were not disclosed this week.

02. Marvel confirmed that its Marvel Unlimited subscription service will officially shut down in 2026.

Marvel made the formal announcement that Marvel Unlimited will shut down in 2026, ending a service that launched in the mid-2000s as one of the first major publisher-backed digital comics subscriptions. The platform gave subscribers unlimited access to a rotating library of Marvel comics, typically on a six-month delay from print publication. For collectors, it served as a catalog tool and a way to read deep into runs before committing to physical purchases or slab submissions.

The shutdown aligns with Marvel's pivot to a WEBTOON-powered app launching in November, signaling a shift in how the company thinks about digital distribution. The move also reflects broader industry trends toward platform consolidation and mobile-first reading experiences, even as the collector market for physical comics remains robust and graded books continue to command premium prices at auction.

03. Informa acquired Clarion Events for $2.8 billion, adding major conventions including Anime NYC and Awesome Con to its portfolio alongside Fan Expo Canada.

Informa completed a $2.8 billion purchase of Clarion Events, the parent company of Leftfield Media's suite of fan conventions including Anime NYC, Rose City Comic Con, Awesome Con, and the upcoming KPEX Korean-themed event. The deal expands Informa's live-event footprint to nearly 1,000 brands across 40 markets and 30 countries, serving more than 9 million attendees and nearly 250,000 exhibitors annually. Clarion's parent, the multinational Blackstone investment group, sold the events business to Informa, which already owned the Fan Expo family of shows and is the world's largest event company by revenue. The combined Live Events operation is projected to generate nearly $5 billion in revenue with annual growth of roughly 7 percent.

Fan conventions are a small revenue slice of the deal. Anime NYC drew more than 170,000 attendees in 2026, and Fan Expo Canada is one of North America's largest fan events, but both are less profitable than Informa's B2B trade shows like the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, Magic Las Vegas, Game Developer's Conference, and World of Concrete. Fan events require more staffing and infrastructure to support guests, concerts, and attendee services, while trade shows generate higher margins from exhibitor fees and corporate sponsorships. Informa ranked first in a 2023 global event-company ranking, RELX (home of ReedPop and New York Comic Con) ranked second, and Clarion ranked third before the acquisition.

The transaction is expected to close in December, with no immediate changes planned for fan events in the short term. Long-term strategy remains uncertain. Informa's Fan Expo shows are considered well-run and professional operations, and Leftfield Media's events have similar reputations. Collectors who attend these conventions for dealer floors, artist alleys, and exclusive variant covers will be watching for any shifts in vendor pricing, floor space allocation, or guest lineups as Informa integrates the Clarion portfolio.

04. Marvel Television debuted exclusive footage of VisionQuest, Daredevil: Born Again's third and final season, and a new Disney+ spy thriller called Zodiac at the NYCC 2026 panel.

Marvel Television's NYCC panel at the Empire Stage showcased upcoming Disney+ series including VisionQuest, which premieres with two episodes on October 14. Show creator Terry Matalas and stars Paul Bettany, James Spader, Ruaridh Mollica, and Emily Hampshire presented an exclusive trailer and screened the first episode for attendees. The series is described as a heady sci-fi examination of humanity as Vision seeks to understand himself, with a unique aesthetic that fits alongside WandaVision and Agatha All Along. The early look suggests VisionQuest will continue the cerebral, emotionally complex tone of Marvel's recent streaming projects.

Daredevil: Born Again will end with a third and final season on Disney+ early next year, matching the three-season run the series had on Netflix. Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter, and Finn Jones appeared at the panel to debut footage of the season, which reunites the Defenders characters from the Netflix MCU era. Mike Colter will also appear as Luke Cage, though he was unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts. The trailer featured Matt Murdock in prison following last season's events and a fight sequence with Matt wearing a makeshift Daredevil outfit made from prison garb. Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum noted that the series promises a rewarding storyline for fans who have followed the street-level MCU since 2015.

Marvel Television also announced Zodiac, a new spy thriller that will shoot in London in the spring with a 2028 release date on Disney+. Winderbaum offered few details beyond confirming the logo and genre, telling fans of the Marvel Comics, "There's a lot hidden in the logo." The panel also included updates on Marvel Animation projects X-Men '97 and Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, both of which have received strong critical reception. X-Men '97 Season 3 clips teased the Brotherhood of Mutants led by Mystique and a wedding between Rogue and Gambit.

05. The 2026 Harvey Awards were presented at NYCC, with Absolute Batman Vol. 1: The Zoo by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta winning Book of the Year.

The Harvey Awards ceremony at the Javits Center closed the second full day of New York Comic Con 2026, honoring creators across multiple categories spanning print, digital, and international comics. Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta's Absolute Batman Vol. 1: The Zoo took Book of the Year, beating a field that included Deniz Camp and Javier Rodriguez's Absolute Martian Manhunter Vol. 1, Ben Passmore's Black Arms to Hold You Up, and Joe Sacco's The Once and Future Riot. The award recognized a DC release that reimagined a core Batman title with a fresh creative approach, continuing the publisher's Absolute universe initiative.

The Digital Book of the Year went to The Lycan by Mike Carey, Thomas Jane, David James Kelly, and Diego Yapur, published by Comixology Originals. The category honored creators redefining publishing through digital-first storytelling and innovation, with nominees including webcomics like Jimmy Gownley's In the Real Dark Night and Tony Cliff's Practical Defense Against Piracy, as well as Rachael Smith's Nap Comix on WEBTOON. The win for a Comixology Originals title comes the same week Marvel Unlimited shut down and Marvel shifted to a WEBTOON-powered app, underscoring the platform churn in digital comics.

Other winners included Faith Erin Hicks' Inbetweens for Best Children's Book, Mariko Tamaki and Nicole Goux's This Place Kills Me for Best Young Adult Book, and Naoki Urasawa and Takashi Nagasaki's Billy Bat for Best Manga. The Best International Book award went to Laura Perez's Nocturnos, published by Fantagraphics. Spider-Noir, the Prime Video and MGM+ series based on the Marvel Comics character created by David Hine, Fabrice Sapolsky, and Carmine Di Giandomenico, won Best Adaptation from Comic Book/Graphic Novel. The Harveys highlighted the breadth of the comics medium in 2026, from superhero reimaginings to digital-first experiments to translated manga and international graphic novels reaching U.S. readers.

06. Marvel and WEBTOON launched a new comics app as the Marvel Unlimited service came to an end.

Marvel and WEBTOON officially launched a new comics app as Marvel Unlimited concluded its 19-year run. The new app represents Marvel's transition to a WEBTOON-powered platform for digital comics distribution, shifting away from the subscription model and interface that Marvel Unlimited used since the mid-2000s. The launch marks the beginning of a new era for Marvel's digital strategy, aligning the company with WEBTOON's mobile-first, vertical-scroll reading format and its infrastructure for original and licensed content.

Collectors who used Marvel Unlimited as a reference tool for tracking character appearances, variant cover histories, and storyline research will need to adapt to the new app's interface and catalog structure. The specifics of the transition—including whether the full Marvel Unlimited catalog migrated, how pricing compares to the old subscription model, and what features the new app offers—remain central questions for users who relied on the service for deep-dive research before buying or grading physical issues.
