The Big Thing
Hunter x Hunter creator Togashi announces no more firm deadlines

Yoshihiro Togashi, creator of the perennially on-hiatus Hunter x Hunter, announced he will no longer accept work with firm deadlines due to ongoing health concerns. The statement comes just four weeks into the manga's latest hiatus, adding weight to long-standing speculation about the series' irregular publication schedule.

Togashi has battled chronic back pain for over a decade, leading to multiple extended breaks in Hunter x Hunter's serialization. The manga, which began in 1998, has spent more time on hiatus than in active publication since 2014. Fans have learned to expect gaps measured in months or years between new chapters.

The announcement effectively makes Hunter x Hunter a when-it's-done proposition with no guaranteed schedule. Togashi's publisher Weekly Shonen Jump has accommodated increasingly irregular releases, printing chapters in batches when the creator's health permits. The series' last sustained run produced just ten chapters before the current break.

For collectors, the news cements Hunter x Hunter volumes as slow-burn investments rather than regular releases. The franchise's erratic output means new tankōbon editions arrive unpredictably, often in spurts after months of silence. Back volumes remain in print and steady sellers despite - or perhaps because of - the series' tortured publication history.

Why it matters: Togashi's health-first approach puts creator welfare ahead of commercial pressure, but it also means one of manga's most acclaimed properties has no clear future timeline. The franchise's collectible ecosystem now operates in permanent limbo, with speculators unable to anticipate new material and readers facing indefinite waits between story beats.
