A 1938 copy of Action Comics #1 sold for $15 million last week, setting a new all-time record for a single comic book and surpassing every other pop culture collectible ever sold at auction. The sale obliterates the previous high-water mark for comic books and positions the Superman debut ahead of vintage movie posters, sports memorabilia, and trading cards.
The book is one of fewer than 100 known surviving copies of the 1938 Detective Comics Inc. release that introduced Superman to the world. Industry sources tell The Comics Beat that the $15 million price represents a significant premium over the last publicly traded Action #1, which changed hands in the mid-seven figures roughly three years ago.
The buyer and seller remain undisclosed, though auction observers note that the transaction took place through private sale rather than a public auction house event.
