Sweet Shop, a new digital comics marketplace, opened to the public Thursday with publisher partners Kodansha, Titan, Dynamite, and Abrams. The platform positions itself as an alternative sales channel in a digital landscape still dominated by ComiXology (Amazon) and the individual publisher apps that proliferated after ComiXology's 2022 restructuring.
The marketplace model mirrors physical retail in one key respect: publishers control pricing and availability while Sweet Shop takes a platform fee rather than traditional wholesale margin. That structure gives creators and rights-holders more direct revenue per sale than the agency model used by most digital storefronts, though Sweet Shop has not disclosed its fee percentage publicly.
Kodansha brings manga catalog depth, Titan its licensed and original graphic novels, Dynamite its genre backlist, and Abrams its all-ages and literary graphic-novel titles. Collectively the four partners represent hundreds of evergreen backlist titles and ongoing series, a broader launch inventory than most digital platforms achieve at public debut.
The timing follows a turbulent year for digital comics infrastructure. Tapas shut down its North American operations earlier this month, Popverse closed in August, and creators remain wary of platform risk after years of ComiXology migration chaos. Sweet Shop enters a market where readers want stability and publishers want leverage, but neither group has found a consensus solution.
Why it matters: A multi-publisher digital storefront with transparent economics could shift leverage back toward smaller publishers who lack the resources to build and maintain their own apps. If Sweet Shop gains traction, it offers an exit from the build-your-own-app era that fragmented the post-ComiXology market and a hedge against single-vendor risk for readers burned by past platform closures.

Len Brown, co-creator of Mars Attacks and T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, has died at 84. Brown developed both properties for Topps in the 1960s. Mars Attacks debuted as a trading-card series in 1962 and later became a Tim Burton film and ongoing comic franchise. T.H.U.N.D.E.R. The artist on DC's Absolute Batman confirms he is stepping away from the series. The departure comes as the Absolute Universe line continues its first-year rollout. DC has not announced a replacement artist or whether the departure affects the book's monthly schedule. The Absolute line launched in late 2025 as DC's answer to Marvel's Ultimate reboot. Rebellion Publishing sells its Solaris imprint to Profile Books. Solaris publishes science fiction, fantasy, and horror novels. The sale marks Rebellion's exit from prose publishing outside its 2000 AD and comics divisions. Profile Books, a UK independent, acquires the backlist and future publishing rights. Martha Wells's Murderbot Diaries is being adapted into a graphic novel. Cosmic Lighthouse will publish the adaptation and plans a Kickstarter campaign to fund production. Wells's sci-fi series has won multiple Hugo and Nebula awards since its 2017 debut. The graphic novel represents one of the higher-profile prose-to-comics adaptations announced this year.
