Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang are launching Roam, a new superhero series that marks their first collaboration since Paper Girls wrapped in 2015. The announcement comes as both creators have built substantial post-Paper Girls careers - Vaughan with We Stand on Guard and Barrier, Chiang with Wonder Woman runs and standalone projects - but fans have long requested the duo work together again.
Paper Girls ran for 30 issues between 2015 and 2019, earning multiple Eisner Awards and spawning an Amazon Prime adaptation in 2022. The time-travel story became one of Image Comics' biggest successes of the 2010s, with early issues now commanding significant aftermarket premiums; Paper Girls #1 first prints routinely sell for $80-$120 in 9.8 grade, while the initial print run of just 15,000 copies makes high-grade examples scarce.
Roam represents a different creative direction, described by Vaughan as exploring "what superhero stories look like in a world where the concept has been exhausted." The series will launch with a standard cover and at least two retailer variants, though neither creator has disclosed publisher details or a release window beyond "2027." Chiang noted in the CBR interview that the project has been in development for nearly three years, suggesting a substantial story runway.
The reunion comes at a moment when creator-owned superhero books face challenging market conditions. Recent launches from Image, BOOM!, and Dark Horse have struggled to match the numbers of early-2020s titles, with even high-profile names seeing issue-two drop-offs of 40-50%. Vaughan's last Image launch, The Many Deaths of Laila Starr with Ram V and Filipe Andrade, stabilized around 12,000 copies per issue after a 28,000-copy debut.
Why it matters: Paper Girls #1 remains one of the most actively traded modern keys, and a Vaughan-Chiang reunion will almost certainly trigger spec buying on announcement of publisher and FOC date. The 2015 playbook - small initial orders, quick sellout, rapid appreciation - may not repeat in today's market, but the creative pedigree alone positions Roam #1 as a likely candidate for ratio variants and convention exclusives that will immediately enter the $50+ range.
What a comic shop will pay you.
You looked the book up on your phone. The shop's offer came back at a fraction of that number. Both numbers can be real: a shop has to buy low enough to resell. Sold comps times the buy rate is the honest offer. The Dealer Buy-Rate Sheet gives you the ranges, each with a source and a check date, before you walk in.
What’s in the 2026 Comics Guide →Batman and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are reuniting in a new crossover series from DC and IDW Comics. The announcement follows the conclusion of the Saturday Morning Adventures TMNT series and arrives as IDW continues to expand its licensed crossover strategy. Previous Batman/TMNT series from 2015-2019 produced multiple collected editions and variant-cover programs, with Batman/TMNT #1 (2015) first prints trading in the $30-$50 range in 9.8. No creative team, release date, or publisher split details have been disclosed. Read at source (CBR) →
Marvel announced a new all-new series featuring the return of X-Men character Jean Grey. The series announcement arrives amid Marvel's continued X-Men line expansion following the From the Ashes relaunch. Marvel has not yet revealed creative teams, a launch date, or whether the title will be ongoing or limited. Jean Grey has anchored solo series twice before - a 2017-2018 run and a 2024 miniseries - with both facing order attrition after strong #1 sales. Read at source (CBR) →
Frank Cho alleges Marvel and Lucasfilm have banned him from working on company properties. The allegation surfaced in a ComicStoresNearMe news roundup covering October 13-19, though no direct statement from Cho, Marvel, or Lucasfilm has been published. Cho has been vocal about content restrictions and editorial mandates in the past, particularly around depictions of female characters. He last drew Marvel covers in 2023 for Savage Avengers and has not illustrated a Star Wars comic since 2018. Read at source (ComicStoresNearMe) →

A collector completed a decades-long Groo quest by acquiring the final issues needed from the pre-Epic run. The vacation haul closed a gap that had persisted since the collector began chasing Sergio Aragonés' barbarian parody in the 1980s, demonstrating the long tail of back-issue collecting even for books outside traditional key territory. Collectors are debating whether digital coloring can replicate the look of original newsprint in recolored comics. One Reddit thread compared The Incredible Hulk #312 versions, with users noting that modern recoloring often misses the dot-pattern texture and color bleed that defined Bronze Age aesthetics, even when reprint publishers attempt to simulate the effect. A collector shared a 1981 price guide page showing X-Men #94 already commanded high values 45 years ago. The guide listed X-Men #94 at price levels that would translate to significant multiples of cover even in that era, illustrating that the book's status as a key predates the modern spec market by decades. A collector added Captain America Comics #27 (June 1943) with a WWII cover by Alex Schomburg to their collection. The post discussed the historical significance of Schomburg's Timely Comics war covers and the scarcity of Golden Age books in collectible condition, as newsprint-era paper degrades rapidly without archival storage.
