The Big Thing
Peter Cullen, voice of Optimus Prime across four decades of Transformers, dies at 85

Peter Cullen, the actor whose baritone defined Optimus Prime in Transformers media from 1984 through 2026, died Wednesday at age 85. CBR confirmed the death Thursday afternoon, though no cause was disclosed.

Cullen voiced the Autobot leader in the original 1984 animated series, the 1986 theatrical film, and every Michael Bay live-action Transformers movie from 2007 to 2023. He reprised the role in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and the recent Paramount animated reboot, making him the longest-tenured voice actor for a single character in franchise history.

His death arrives as Hasbro prepares its 2027 Transformers 40th-anniversary product line, which industry sources say will feature heavy nostalgia marketing built around the original Generation 1 aesthetic Cullen helped popularize. Preliminary solicitations for next year's comic launches from Skybound already reference the 1984 voice cast in promotional copy.

Cullen's portrayal anchored the brand's collector appeal for adult buyers who grew up with the original series. Transformers comics featuring Optimus Prime, particularly issues tied to Cullen's live-action film era, have steadily appreciated over the past decade. IDW Publishing's Transformers #1 from 2019, which Cullen promoted at San Diego Comic-Con, now trades at double its cover price in raw NM condition.

Why it matters: Cullen's voice work tied three generations of Transformers fans to a single character, creating the kind of cultural continuity that drives long-term collector demand. His passing may trigger short-term speculation on key Optimus Prime comic appearances, but the larger effect will be felt in how Hasbro and its licensees choose to honor his legacy in anniversary products already in the pipeline for 2027.
