Dan Boultwood, the artist behind the Image Comics series CHU and co-creator of several indie titles, pleaded guilty to grooming and abusing illustrator Maddie Williams when she was 15 years old in 2010. A U.K. court handed him a suspended three-year sentence.
Williams was a minor working as an illustrator when Boultwood, then an established professional in the British comics industry, began the relationship. The abuse occurred during a period when Williams was developing her own career in the field, creating a power imbalance that prosecutors emphasized during the proceedings.
Boultwood's work includes the well-received CHU series with John Layman at Image, plus creator-owned projects published through Titan and other indie publishers. The suspended sentence means he will avoid prison time unless he violates the terms of his probation over the next three years.
The case underscores the comics industry's ongoing reckoning with misconduct by established creators who exploit access to younger professionals. Several publishers have faced pressure to cut ties with creators accused of abuse, though enforcement remains inconsistent across the market.
Why it matters: The guilty plea puts a creator with active series and ongoing contracts into legal jeopardy, forcing publishers to weigh reputational risk against existing publishing agreements. Collectors holding signed Boultwood books or original art face the same calculus that follows any creator's public fall from grace — resale value often drops when a creator's work becomes culturally radioactive, though some segments of the market treat notoriety as a curiosity premium.

CBCS vs CGC, with the thin data marked.
On the sales we matched, a CBCS slab traded at 80–97% of the CGC price. That rests on 14 sales across two books, so the chart marks it thin instead of calling it settled. Every number in the 2026 Comics Guide has a source, and the weak ones say so.
