The Big Thing
Journey Into Mystery #83 sells for record $222,200

The first appearance of Thor just set a new benchmark. Journey Into Mystery #83, published by Marvel in 1962, sold at auction for $222,200, establishing a record for the issue. The sale marks another data point in the sustained strength of Silver Age Marvel keys, particularly first appearances of characters with active film and streaming presence.

Thor debuted in Journey Into Mystery #83 with art by Jack Kirby and script by Larry Lieber from a Stan Lee plot. The character anchored the title until it was renamed The Mighty Thor with issue #126 in 1966. Journey Into Mystery #83 has long ranked among the most sought Silver Age books, but prices accelerated after the character's MCU debut in 2011 and have climbed steadily through multiple film appearances.

The $222,200 result follows a pattern of strong auction performance for early Marvel superhero firsts. Amazing Fantasy #15 (Spider-Man) has crossed $3 million in high grade, and X-Men #1 routinely brings six figures in 9.0 or better. Journey Into Mystery #83 in CGC 9.4 sold for $132,000 in 2020, so this result suggests continued appreciation even as the broader market cooled from 2021 peaks.

The sale comes as Marvel integrates Thor into multiple upcoming projects, including the rumored Avengers: Secret Wars films slated for 2028 and 2029. Film announcements historically precede price bumps of 12 to 18 months, so collectors are positioning ahead of expected demand.

Why it matters: The record underscores that museum-grade Silver Age Marvel keys remain insulated from broader market softness. While Modern and Copper Age books saw sharp corrections in 2024-2025, early Marvel superhero firsts in high grade continue to find institutional and high-net-worth buyers willing to set records. For collectors holding mid-grade copies (5.0-7.0), the result signals stable floor pricing but limited upside without a grade jump.
