The Big Thing
Diamond bankruptcy deal includes Dark Horse, Vault, Dstlry, Oni, Titan

Diamond Comic Distributors has reached a bankruptcy settlement with five publishers: Dark Horse, Dstlry, Oni Press, Titan Comics, and Vault Comics. The deal marks the latest step in the distributor's Chapter 11 proceedings, which have reshaped how independent and mid-size publishers route books to comic shops.

Diamond filed for bankruptcy protection earlier this year after decades as the industry's dominant distributor. Marvel and DC had already moved to Penguin Random House and Lunar Distribution respectively in prior years, leaving Diamond serving primarily independent publishers. The company's financial troubles stem from shrinking market share, rising logistics costs, and the structural shift toward direct publisher distribution.

The terms of the settlement were not disclosed, but the agreement allows these five publishers to continue working with Diamond under reorganized payment structures. Dark Horse, one of the largest remaining Diamond clients, represents a significant portion of the distributor's current volume with titles across creator-owned, licensed, and manga categories. Vault and Dstlry, both newer publishers, had relied heavily on Diamond's reach to specialty retailers.

The bankruptcy has forced many shops to establish accounts directly with publishers or turn to alternative distributors like Lunar, which expanded its catalog beyond DC titles. Some retailers report the fragmentation has increased administrative overhead but improved shipping reliability and discount terms for certain publishers. Bankruptcy court filings show Diamond still services roughly 1,200 comic shops, down from a peak above 3,000 in the 2010s.

Why it matters: Diamond's collapse from monopoly to restructuring reflects the comic retail market's permanent decentralization. How the company emerges from bankruptcy will determine whether specialty shops continue to have a one-stop distributor option or must manage dozens of publisher accounts individually, a shift that favors larger stores with dedicated staff over small independents.
