The Big Thing
Marvel Unlimited shuts down in December after 19 years as WEBTOON assumes Marvel digital library

Marvel announced at New York Comic-Con that Marvel Unlimited, the subscription service launched in 2007, will shut down in December. WEBTOON, the South Korean digital comics platform, will launch a replacement app in November to host the Marvel Comics digital library under a new premium service that releases titles 30 days after print, according to ComicStoresNearMe's news roundup.

Marvel Unlimited currently offers over 30,000 back-issue comics for $9.99 per month or $69 annually, with new issues added six months after print. The WEBTOON replacement will compress that window to one month, a structural change that brings Marvel's digital strategy in line with DC Universe Infinite's current model but potentially pressures direct-market retailers who rely on a longer exclusivity window for physical sales.

WEBTOON has already partnered with Marvel on original webcomic content, but assuming the entire Marvel library marks the platform's most aggressive move into North American superhero publishing. The company's vertical-scroll reading format dominates mobile manga and webcomic distribution in Asia, with over 82 million monthly active users globally as of 2025. Marvel subscribers will need to transition to the new app before December; existing Marvel Unlimited subscriptions will not automatically convert.

The announcement came bundled with a wave of NYCC reveals, including a new Marvel x Kadokawa manga line starting with I Am Iron Man by artist TERU, confirmation that the Star Wars/Marvel crossover has extended from four to six issues and will be canon to the Marvel Comics Universe, and new Spider-Man series including Spider-Punk and Spider-Man: Noir. Marvel also confirmed a Peter Parker vs. Miles Morales crossover event for 2027, and Iman Vellani's involvement has upgraded X-Orcists from a limited series to an ongoing, with Elsa Bloodstone joining in issue three.

Why it matters: A 30-day digital delay shrinks the print advantage that drives pull-list subscriptions and Wednesday traffic. Retailers who count on the six-month buffer to move physical back issues now compete with instant digital access one month out. WEBTOON's mobile-first interface could also reshape how younger readers discover Marvel, favoring scroll-friendly formats over traditional page layouts and potentially influencing future creative decisions.

Don't pay original prices for a reprint.

A facsimile is a modern reprint of a famous cover. Bought as the original, it's the most common way new collectors lose money on comics. Part I of the 2026 Comics Guide covers the facsimile trap first, then the other fakes.
