Mike McFarland, the veteran voice actor best known for voicing Master Roshi in the Dragon Ball franchise, has died at age 56. The news sent shockwaves through the anime and manga collecting community Wednesday, where Dragon Ball remains one of the most actively traded properties across both vintage Japanese editions and modern English releases.
McFarland's two-decade tenure as the English voice of the Turtle Hermit spanned Dragon Ball Z Kai, Dragon Ball Super, and numerous films and video games. His interpretation of the character helped define Master Roshi for an entire generation of Western fans who discovered the series through Funimation's dubs in the early 2000s.
