A Gil Kane story from Murder Incorporated #1 (1951) is now at auction, and the plot reads like something ripped from actual mob history. The Fox Features title featured a tale about a gangster headquarters being bombed by airplane, an event that actually happened during the violent turf wars of organized crime in the 1940s. Kane, who would go on to define Silver Age superhero art with his work on Green Lantern and The Atom, was still developing his signature style in these early crime comics.
Murder Incorporated ran for only four issues from Fox Features Syndicate between 1948 and 1951, part of the true-crime wave that saturated newsstands before the Comics Code Authority cracked down on violence. The series dramatized real gangland killings and underworld power struggles, leaning into sensational headlines that were still fresh in readers' minds. Fox was known for pushing content boundaries, and Murder Incorporated sat alongside titles like Crimes By Women and Women in Prison in the publisher's lurid catalog.
The aerial bombing story reflects a real 1931 incident in which rival mobsters attempted to kill rival gang members by dropping dynamite from a plane over a Brooklyn headquarters. While the actual attack failed to kill its intended targets, it became a legendary example of how far gangsters would go during Prohibition's final years. Kane's version translated that violence into sequential art, years before he would become one of the most respected draftsmen in superhero comics.
Fox Features collapsed in 1955 after years of financial trouble and Code-related censorship. Most of its crime titles vanished from memory, but collectors have recently rediscovered these books for their raw art and historical value. Murder Incorporated issues rarely surface in high grade because of poor paper quality and the fact that parents typically threw them away once the moral panic around crime comics reached fever pitch in the early 1950s.
Why it matters: This auction puts a spotlight on Gil Kane's pre-superhero work at a moment when Golden Age crime comics are climbing in both collector interest and scholarly attention. Books like Murder Incorporated document a short, intense publishing era that ended abruptly, and surviving copies with strong Kane art are becoming harder to find.
